Self Host Self Help? Not So Much.

If you follow me on twitter, you know what I’m about to say.  If you don’t follow me on twitter, you should.  Click here 😉 .

In a fluttering, impulsive, (so very typically me) fashion, I decided (in a split second) to purchase my own blog domain and make the jump to a self- hosted website.

In the next week or so, I’ll be posting the link up to the new address.  I’m really excited to have more control over the blog’s layout, have access to more interesting bells & whistles, and other cool stuff.  I can’t wait to hear what you guys think!

I am very excited but I am struggling quite a bit, actually. If any readers know anything about using wordpress.org and want to help a sistah out, I would reeeeally appreciate it. Please e-mail me at FindingSilverLinings@gmail.com.

Speaking of changing things up, I dyed my brown hair black (thanks Tiffany for your input!), *iPhone pic, sorry guys*.

I cashed in a few gift cards at Home Goods and picked up a new comforter for our bed.  I’m not sure how I feel about it.  I love the pattern, I love my headboard.  I don’t know if they mesh well.

Rocco was digging it.

Thoughts on the new blog venture, hair color, bedding, Rocco’s mustache?

Please help this indecisive girl out!

How I Brought My Old High Heels Back To Life!

If you know me, you know what a shoe girl I am.  It sounds cliché, but it’s true.  It’s almost embarrassing that I used to sneak new shoe boxes into my house or leave them in my car until nobody was home.  “Oh these shoes? These old things?!  I had them at the bottom of my closet and forgot all about them until I found them tonight”.  If I was Pinocchio, I would have poked out countless eyes with my quickly growing nose.

IMG from Insidepulse.com

This was last weekend’s attempt to “organize” some of my summer shoes and stuff them under my bed in this vinyl thingamajig.

Let me get to the point.  I saw this on Pinterest and had to do it. Click HERE to see my pinboards.

D-I-Y Glitter Heels!! Click here to see the tutorial I followed.

I had the perfect heels waiting for this project.  Scuffed, comfy, and sitting in my closet already.

See?!  Scuffed. These girls and I have been through some good times together.  I just wasn’t ready to toss them yet…

I gathered my funky old shoes, super-fine glitter (I had silver & blue on hand), Mod Podge (I used satin finish), a stiff bristle paintbrush, a disposable tray, and a large piece of paper (or newspaper to protect your work surface).

I poured out about 1/3 of the glitter onto my tray. I decided to go with only silver.  You can mix colors if you’d like I’m sure.

I poured in a blob of Mod Podge.  You can always add more, so I went easy and it was just enough.

I stirred it up until it was well mixed and goopy.  I panicked a little bit when it looked cloudy, but Mod Podge dries very clear. No worries 🙂 .

I applied a not-too-thin-but-not-too-thick first coat to the shoes.

I let this coat dry for about 20 minutes. Then I slapped on another coat.

It’s pretty safe to say that at this point, I was squealing like a 10-year-old Justin Bieber fan.

I was twirling skipping wearing these all day long!  I kept looking down at my feet and giggling!

Pinterest Can Give You Better Hair & Makeup Skills (part 3)

Yep.  Have you ever tried to explain how you want your stylist to do your hair for the upcoming wedding that you have to go to? Like used only words.  Bad things can happen for both you and your hair dresser all because you said “caramel highlights” and her idea of caramel is copper and yours is a medium blonde.   Or let’s say that you’re smarter than me, and know that you should probably bring a photo of what you want so the poor girl behind the MAC Makeup counter has a clue what you’re talking about when you say subtle smokey eye (yeah, you know what I’m talking about 🙂 ).  Pinterest has  been an endless supply of envy-worthy hair and makeup photos.

Pinterest Can Teach You How To Dress (Part 1)

I know I’ve been obsessing over Pinterest.  I know.

No really I do.

The fashion pins have really been rocking my world lately though.  I used to consider myself reasonably well dressed.  I knew I didn’t have the wardrobe or cash of Blake Lively, so I knew I wasn’t stepping out of casa FSL in Christian Louboutains.  However, the way I put an outfit together was all wrong.  You don’t really need a ton of money to dress well.  You need to understand proportion and accessories.

Lately I’ve been pinning style boards.  They can be made on Polyvore.com.  But I’m lazy I guess. I’m inspired by what other people have been putting together.

Here are some of my recent faves…

These aren’t the only ways Pinterest can teach you how to dress.  Nope.  There are countless cute outfit pictures to pin and re-pin…then come up with your own version!

My First Craft Show

My aunt makes gorgeous jewelry and was going to be a vendor at the local Fall Festival. Along with a few other women, she was going in on renting a space for their tent.  She asked me to join in, but I didn’t have enough items for all 3 days.  I agreed to do an afternoon and just bring what I had (which wasn’t much) and set up a small table.

At the last minute, the other ladies backed out leaving my aunt stuck paying for the whole thing, so I went all in.  I locked myself in my craft room (which I started calling “The Lab”) for a week and a half and made a lot more headbands, brooches, pins, etc.  I studied a few boards on Pinterest and researched a bit on how to set up a craft fair booth.  I even made a D-I-Y cake stand for part of my display (keep your eyes peeled for that tutorial soon!).

The night before, I set up a mock table in  my dining room so I could save time the next day.

I had to figure out how to display lots and lots of headbands using minimal table space and without crushing them.  Not easy.  I could have gone to Michael’s Craft Store and spent a fortune on cookie cutter, boring display pieces, but I didn’t want to spend a fortune or have a display that looked like anyone else’s.  So I did what I do best.  I looked around my house for things I could use creatively. I used my plain cylinder vases by putting hard headbands into them. I liked the way they fanned out around the vase.  I also placed a decorative branch in each vase and clipped hair pins and clips onto the branches.

I put the stretchy headbands on various Marilyn Monroe & Audrey Hepburn themed books…

I made price tags, wrote down my inventory, snapped some pics of the general set up so I can remember what I did, got $100 in change, gathered my bags & business cards and put the items into labeled ziplock bags.

Since the fair was 3 days long, all vendors had to set up and take down their booths each day.  So, I packed everything into my huge suitcase (and a big tupperware bin) so I could wheel the heavy stuff to and from my car.

I didn’t have time or cash to buy a new tablecloth, so I used our old silver velvet duvet cover, lol!  We had to supply our own lights as well, so I stole the snazzy ones off of our night stands.

I used one of our snack trays as my “check out stand”.  I used our silver sparkly umbrella stand to showcase the feather headbands and accessories.

From the vases and books that I decorate with, to our bedroom decor, our  house was left looking like the Grinch came & stole everything for 3 days!

ME:

 I was ready to go!

The funny thing is, most people stopped to inquire about the lamps!

This set up was a bit busy, so as the day went by, I condensed and moved things around.

I went from the butterfly bobby pins , rosebud pins, & ladybug pins on a paper plate (sorry about the blurry pic) to using my metal containers that used to house my herb garden and mousse cups that a co-worker gave me.

Here are a few of my best seller items, in case you were curious.

Every Day I’m Hustlin’

Okay, I’m not hustlin Rick Ross style, but if you follow me on Twitter, you know what I mean!  My latest tweet barrage has been new merchandise listed in the Finding Silver Linings Boutique.

My aunt makes beautiful beaded jewelry and is getting a booth at the local craft festival.  She invited me to pull up a table and maybe sell a few things.  I agreed and realized that I didn’t have that many things to sell (then panicked)!

I locked myself in The Lab AKA my craft room.  I emerged with tons of new things!  I barely scratched the surface with what I posted on Etsy, but here’s a little sample…

The Clara Headband

Karina Rings

Tu-Tu Clips

Mila Headband

Taya Butterfly Headbands

I’m really excited about the new stuff!  I started making feather earrings yesterday and I’m liking those too 🙂 . Don’t forget, FSL reader get 10% off EVERYTHING!  Use coupon code “WELCOME10” at checkout.

I’m going through a ton of preparations for this craft far.  I want my table to be really pretty and reflect what I like.  I made some fun displays, so look for those posts this week!

Wedding Week Part 1

It’s Wedding Week here at casa FSL!  Our 1 year wedding anniversary is Saturday!  To celebrate, this week will be filled with all things weddings!  To kick things off, I’m going to (re-post) share our engagement story.

We agreed that we were going to buy a house before we got engaged.  We had put an offer in on a house (which the offer fell through eventually).  He was dragging his feet a bit with the house as if he didn’t want to buy it anymore.  It was exactly what we were looking for.  I was freeeeeaking out   just a little nervous because I thought he suddenly was having second thoughts about us living together (it turns out, he was saving for a ring, not a down payment).  I though he was second guessing our relationship, and inside I was frantically over-analyzing a little worried.

Thanksgiving day he and I ran a 5 mile race. That night, my mother, aunt, and I went “Midnight Madness” shopping until around 3:30AM.  The next day was Black Friday, and I was completely exhausted. We went to his sister’s house for a birthday party which lasted into the evening. He told me to wear something nice in case we met our friends out for a drink.  The birthday party lasted much longer than I had expected and I was beat.  I never do this, but I told him I didn’t want to meet our friends out, I was too tired. He insisted, and said they were already on their way to the restaurant/bar (which was a 30 minute drive for us).  I hate flaking out, so I agreed to go and have just one drink.

We were getting off of the exit, and he got a text message from our friend.  He said “You’ve got to be kidding!  You’re gonna kill me.  They are blowing us off” (a staged text from his friend that was in on the surprise) I was so mad!  He said not to worry, we’ll grab one drink at the first place we see off the exit, and then we’ll go home.  Well we might as well, we did drive all the way out here.

We pulled into the parking lot, and I realized it was the place we went on our first date!  I said “Hey! I thought this place closed down!”  He said he thought so too.  We walked in, he got us both a drink and we sat down on the couch in front of the fireplace way in the back (the same place we sat on our first date).

He’s usually very quiet, so when there was a dj there playing loud music, it didn’t bother me.  He said it was too loud, and we wouldn’t be able to talk to each other without yelling.  He asked the dj to lower the music and he requested “They way you look tonight” by Frank Sinatra (I love Frank Sinatra)

So he sits back down, and as he’s talking, he was pushing the coffee table away from him.  He started to kneel down (I was NOT expecting this so I thought he was going to tie his shoe or something) and the next thing I knew, I looked down and he had a ring in his hand!!!  I sat there in complete disbelief for a few seconds. I was worried for days that he was questioning the future of our relationship, and moving in together, and there he was on his knee with a ring! I started crying and said yes!

We later met my sister and her boyfriend out to celebrate!

That photo was taken about an hour after I said yes.  I was cheezin so hard! Aint he cute?!  Sorry ladies, he’s taken.

Here are a few of our engagement pictures.  We took them at a local vineyard.

How did your fiance or husband pop the question?? If you aren’t married or engaged, how do you hope it will be?
