Self Host Self Help? Not So Much.

If you follow me on twitter, you know what I’m about to say.  If you don’t follow me on twitter, you should.  Click here 😉 .

In a fluttering, impulsive, (so very typically me) fashion, I decided (in a split second) to purchase my own blog domain and make the jump to a self- hosted website.

In the next week or so, I’ll be posting the link up to the new address.  I’m really excited to have more control over the blog’s layout, have access to more interesting bells & whistles, and other cool stuff.  I can’t wait to hear what you guys think!

I am very excited but I am struggling quite a bit, actually. If any readers know anything about using wordpress.org and want to help a sistah out, I would reeeeally appreciate it. Please e-mail me at FindingSilverLinings@gmail.com.

Speaking of changing things up, I dyed my brown hair black (thanks Tiffany for your input!), *iPhone pic, sorry guys*.

I cashed in a few gift cards at Home Goods and picked up a new comforter for our bed.  I’m not sure how I feel about it.  I love the pattern, I love my headboard.  I don’t know if they mesh well.

Rocco was digging it.

Thoughts on the new blog venture, hair color, bedding, Rocco’s mustache?

Please help this indecisive girl out!

How I Brought My Old High Heels Back To Life!

If you know me, you know what a shoe girl I am.  It sounds cliché, but it’s true.  It’s almost embarrassing that I used to sneak new shoe boxes into my house or leave them in my car until nobody was home.  “Oh these shoes? These old things?!  I had them at the bottom of my closet and forgot all about them until I found them tonight”.  If I was Pinocchio, I would have poked out countless eyes with my quickly growing nose.

IMG from Insidepulse.com

This was last weekend’s attempt to “organize” some of my summer shoes and stuff them under my bed in this vinyl thingamajig.

Let me get to the point.  I saw this on Pinterest and had to do it. Click HERE to see my pinboards.

D-I-Y Glitter Heels!! Click here to see the tutorial I followed.

I had the perfect heels waiting for this project.  Scuffed, comfy, and sitting in my closet already.

See?!  Scuffed. These girls and I have been through some good times together.  I just wasn’t ready to toss them yet…

I gathered my funky old shoes, super-fine glitter (I had silver & blue on hand), Mod Podge (I used satin finish), a stiff bristle paintbrush, a disposable tray, and a large piece of paper (or newspaper to protect your work surface).

I poured out about 1/3 of the glitter onto my tray. I decided to go with only silver.  You can mix colors if you’d like I’m sure.

I poured in a blob of Mod Podge.  You can always add more, so I went easy and it was just enough.

I stirred it up until it was well mixed and goopy.  I panicked a little bit when it looked cloudy, but Mod Podge dries very clear. No worries 🙂 .

I applied a not-too-thin-but-not-too-thick first coat to the shoes.

I let this coat dry for about 20 minutes. Then I slapped on another coat.

It’s pretty safe to say that at this point, I was squealing like a 10-year-old Justin Bieber fan.

I was twirling skipping wearing these all day long!  I kept looking down at my feet and giggling!

Rocco’s Ugly Sweater Party Dilemma

So, this weekend is our annual ugly sweater party.  See last year’s highlight reel by clicking  here.  If you’re feeling lazy, here is a mini sampler of the fun.

We usually have Rocco sleep at his grandparent’s house.  This year we figured we’d let him in on the action.

Mr. FSL & I went Christmas shopping this past Saturday.  We stopped at good ole Tar-Jay for some wrapping paper , tape, boxes, etc… He grabbed a coffee at the in-house Starbucks.  I stalked the dollar section and found ugly dog sweaters.  If Rock is going to be at the party, he might as well represent.

Sunday morning I wanted to try it on my little pork chop of a Maltese.  He was clearly ecstatic about the sweater selection.

I remembered having a few Christmas things for him stashed away in a closet.

Here are his Christmas Eve PJs. Okay, maybe he need to switch to lo-cal puppy chow these days, but who doesn’t add a little fluff around the holidays?!

Santa Paws hat.

And my personal favorite, the naughty elf.

Big mistake giving him a rawhide toy before our little photo shoot.  He gnaws until it’s gooey.  His mustache is a disaster.  Our apologies for Rock not being photo ready.

I’m having a tough decision.  What should he wear to the 2011 FSL Ugly Sweater Party?

Pinterest Can Give You Better Hair & Makeup Skills (part 3)

Yep.  Have you ever tried to explain how you want your stylist to do your hair for the upcoming wedding that you have to go to? Like used only words.  Bad things can happen for both you and your hair dresser all because you said “caramel highlights” and her idea of caramel is copper and yours is a medium blonde.   Or let’s say that you’re smarter than me, and know that you should probably bring a photo of what you want so the poor girl behind the MAC Makeup counter has a clue what you’re talking about when you say subtle smokey eye (yeah, you know what I’m talking about 🙂 ).  Pinterest has  been an endless supply of envy-worthy hair and makeup photos.

Pinterest Can Teach You How To Dress (Part 1)

I know I’ve been obsessing over Pinterest.  I know.

No really I do.

The fashion pins have really been rocking my world lately though.  I used to consider myself reasonably well dressed.  I knew I didn’t have the wardrobe or cash of Blake Lively, so I knew I wasn’t stepping out of casa FSL in Christian Louboutains.  However, the way I put an outfit together was all wrong.  You don’t really need a ton of money to dress well.  You need to understand proportion and accessories.

Lately I’ve been pinning style boards.  They can be made on Polyvore.com.  But I’m lazy I guess. I’m inspired by what other people have been putting together.

Here are some of my recent faves…

These aren’t the only ways Pinterest can teach you how to dress.  Nope.  There are countless cute outfit pictures to pin and re-pin…then come up with your own version!

$30 Bathroom Revamp

Our main bathroom was the first “finished” room in our house.  It was fully decorated a week or so after we moved in.  Here’s what it looked like:

The shimmery taupe shower curtain is nice, but I’m over it.  The blank wall above le toilette, lame.  Gold accents, buh bye.

I have been feeling smokier cool weather colors with the changing of the season.  Charcoal greys and navy blues, maybe a hint of shimmery cream here and there.

I saw this photo:

I found this Botticelli image while on Colourlovers.com’s color palette generator (click here to play on the website for hours try it out really quickly 😉  ).  It’s a great tool when looking for decorating ideas.  A unique color palette to match is generated for each picture.

Here’s what it looks like:

Sweet.  I found this shower curtain ($25) at good old Tar-Jay, along with a charcoal grey hand towel ($5) , and added my new D-I-Y’ed wreath above the toilet (free!).

The color isn’t seeming to com though as true to life.  It’s a bit more blue in real life.

Not bad for thirty smackers!  Ahhh, out with the old right?!

Let The Sunlight In!

In our kitchen that is!  I’ve been complaining about our lame wall with no windows and the ugliest off-centered air conditioning unit for the past 8 months.

Last week, the whining came to a screeching halt!  Woo to the hoo!

We had a window installed! Here’s what casa FSL looked like for a couple of days…

When I woke up the next morning, I felt like the Window Fairy had come!  For the very first time, there was sunlight in our kitchen!!!  I literally squealed!

Ooh la la!

Good Will Lamp Re-Do

I’ve been looking for a set of lamps with a cool shape to put on my buffet console in my dining room.  Problem is they are a billion dollars for anything that I like.  Seriously?  I’m not paying $200 for lamps.  Period.

Well, a couple of weeks ago I found myself in the houseware section of Good Will looking for my next victim project.   These puppies were $6.99 a pop.

See…

I love the burlap texture of the lamp shades. Lucky for me it was student discount Tuesday!  I scooped up both of them for $10 total.  That’s my kind of price tag people.  I’m not a total cheapskate; I just feel like a sucker paying top dollar for something that I can make for a fraction of the cost.

These things obviously needed an update, so I hit them with a little spray paint primer first.

I followed that with 2 very thin coats of spray paint in “Heirloom White”.

These sat in our garage for weeks.  They didn’t look finished.  Hmmm…

*taps foot impatiently*

Until yesterday 😀

For those of you that follow me on Twitter (if you don’t, you can by clicking the cute little bird in my side bar —-> ) then you already know that I am completely out of control with these fabric flowers.  Like the past three days, that’s all I’ve been doing.  Cray-Zay.

I whipped up 8 fabric beauties, and pulled out the hot glue. (Rocco was chasing the fabric snippings that were blowing in the wind!)

I popped on the flowers one by one…

I arranged the rest of them on the shade.

2 Large and in charge lamps that match my dining room for ten beans.  Sweet.

Looking Back…What A Rockin’ Year!

Today is my last day of school!!! Actually, it’s a half day 🙂  I am uber psyched!  Every time I reach the end of something, I reflect.  I reflect to see what I’ve learned, what I could do better next time, and how I’ve grown as a person from the experience.

As I look back,  it was a great year for me.  I have so much to be thankful for.

Here’s my last year in review…

June 2010: I had my bridal shower, bachelorette party, and found out our offer was accepted on our first house! Click here & here to see what our house looked like before we bought it.

July 2010: I went from Mindy Mac to Mindy P!  I married my best friend July 30th. See pics of that here. We paid a honeymoon visit to Negril, Jamaica.

August 2010: I turned 28, moved into my in law’s house and gained 8 pounds because my mother-in-law is an amazing cook!!  Click here for her crockpot chicken & potatoes recipe.

September 2010:  We finally closed on our house!!!

October 2011:  We moved in!!! Mr.FSL turned 32.  His vineyard birthday party is where we snapped this picture…

November 2010: November 1st was the inaugural post (about jalapeno infused tequila no less, lol! See my first post here).  I got my wisdom teeth pulled. We hosted our first family holiday at casa FSL!  I made my first Thanksgiving turkey!! (Hear about that mess new experience here)

December 2010: Our first married Christmas in our new home!  Instead of a housewarming party, we had a “Bad Christmas Sweater Party” and made a shot-ski!  Hear all about that crazy time here.

January 2011: The snowiest winter on record for CT! Actually, there was so much snow, our roof that extended over our beck deck (which extends the entire length of the house) collapsed!  Hear about that craziness here. Here’s a shot of my husband and his dad & our borrowed snow blower on the back deck.  That lovely metal piece in the background used to be our roof 😦

February 2011:  We took a much needed vacation to Salt Lake City, Utah!  We went skiing on some of the most beautiful terrain & ate at the oldest saloon in the state! Get the scoop on that trip here, here, and here.

March 2011: We threw our first rager!  About 100 people came to our house for a surprise party.  We had the pizza truck & a comedian, great time.  I got the DIY itch & painted a chalkboard wall in our kitchen & decorated it for the occasion. I drew Yankee Stadium & a pic of the b-day boy on it…

April 2011: My chicken tortilla soup recipe was featured by Oxygen Magazine!!  I was sooo excited, it’s my fitness bible (get the recipe for that here)! My husband & I did a photo shoot in a haunted opera house (see those pics & the insane video here)  My craigslist desk makeover was “Freshly Pressed” and is still the most popular post on Finding Silver Linings to date.  I was stoked and amazed that I was also a  “Pop Pressed” featured blogger!  Crazy!!!

Are you kidding?! I was so excited!

May 2011:  My mom & I had the best Mother’s Day ever!  We hit up Manhattan for a spa day, made it on TV, and ate at one of the best restaurants in the country!! (Hear all about it here).  I started my vegetable garden!

June 2011:  Here we are! Finally feeling settled at our house.  Getting the hang of keeping up after laundry, cooking, cleaning, wife-ing, ya know, that whole thing.  All in all, what a wonderful year!  I can’t wait to see what summer vacation brings!  You all know I have a list of stuff to do!!

Sorry for the uber wordy post.  I guess I am feeling a bit nostalgic. Looking back does that to me.

Thanks for sticking around 🙂  I love you guys!!!

xoxo
